Affordable Liver Cancer Treatment Options in India

Different types of doctors closely work together in order to create an overall treatment plan by combining various types of cancer treatments. Options which are included in liver cancer treatment depend upon several factors like how much of liver is affected by cancer, whether cancer has spread beyond liver, the preference & overall health of the patient & the amount of damage caused to the remaining cancer-free areas of the organ.

Liver Cancer Treatment Options

Disease-directed treatment options are generally recommended for patients whose tumor has been diagnosed in early stages. Moreover, doctors may not use them if the tumor is bigger than 5 cm. The following liver cancer treatments are commonly utilized by doctors.

Surgery – Surgery as liver cancer treatment involves removal of tumor along with some healthy surrounding tissue during an operation.

Hepatectomy – This surgical procedure is designed to remove a portion of the liver which is diseased. Generally performed when liver cancer is limited to one section of the organ while the other part is working well. Moreover, liver will also grow back to normal size within few weeks of time following hepatectomy operation.

Liver Transplantation – This procedure is applicable only when liver cancer has not spread outside the organ. Moreover, a suitable donor is also to be found. However liver transplantation is not always a practical option as the number of donor livers which are available is quite limited.

Thermal Ablation – Also known as RadioFrequency Ablation (RFA), this procedure & microwave therapy utilize heat for destroying cancerous cells. These are applied through skin, or through laparoscopic techniques or during a surgical intervention while the patient is sedated.

Percutaneous Ethanol Injection – This is a procedure which involves directly injecting alcohol into liver tumor so as to destroy them. This procedure is quite simple, safe & effective for tumors which are smaller than 3 cm albeit side effects which include fever & pain.

Radiation Therapy – This liver cancer treatment procedure involves using high-energy x-rays or other particles for destroying cancerous cells. Radiation therapy is typically administered by radiation oncologists specializing in cancer treatments.

Chemoembolization – This is a type of chemotherapy treatment which is quite similar to hepatic arterial infusion with a difference that it locally utilizes chemotherapy drugs for destroying cancerous cells. Chemotherapy drugs during this procedure are injected into the hepatic artery while flow of blood through the artery is temporarily blocked for a short time in order to enable chemotherapy to stay longer within the tumor.

Targeted Therapy – This type of liver cancer treatment procedure targets cancer-specific proteins, genes or tissue environment which contributes to growth of cancer. It is designed to block growth & spread of cancerous cells alongside limiting damage to healthy cells.

Immunotherapy – Also known as biologic therapy, immunotherapy is designed to boost the natural defenses of the body to fight cancer. Side effects of immunotherapy are miniscule & generally similar to that of flu, including fatigue, headache, chills, fever & muscle pain.
