Common Tests for Determining Candidacy for Heart Bypass Surgery

Common tests which are performed on heart patients for determining eligibility to heart bypass surgery include the following.

Electrocardiogram (EKG) – This is a simple test which is meant to detect and record the electrical activity of the heart. EKG is useful in detecting and locating the source of the problem involving the heart. It is an ideal test which can pinpoint if the rhythm of heartbeat is steady or irregular alongside recording timing and strength of electrical signals.

Stress Test – There are some problems associated with the heart which are easy to diagnose while the heart is functioning. Stress test involves making the heart beat fast and work harder while these test are performed on the patient. Medications creating such conditions are also available for heart patients who are unable to exercise and which can effectively create simulated effects. Tests which are a part of Stress Test include MRI and PET scanning of the heart, echocardiography and nuclear heart scanning.

Echocardiography – This test uses sound waves which create a moving picture of the heart. Echocardiography provides information about the shape and size of the patient’s heart along with letting the doctor know about the functioning of heart valves. Echocardiography also identifies areas of poor blood flow within heart and of heart muscles which are unable to normally contract. Previous injuries sustained by the heart muscle can also be identified. Moreover, there are several types of echocardiography which is available for heart patients.

Coronary Angiography – This procedure involves using a special dye and x-rays which will provide information about the internal situation of coronary arteries. For this purpose a catheter is inserted within the patient’s blood vessel and threaded into the coronary arteries. Special x-rays are subsequently taken while the dye is still flowing through the coronary artery of the patient. Amount of flow of blood through the coronary artery vessels and the heart can easily be detected by doctors with help of this procedure.

Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery

This is a minimally invasive heart surgery approach which bypasses the clogged coronary artery blood vessel segment with help of a graft which is meant to restore blood flow to the heart. While the traditional CABG procedure involves cutting open the entire chest in order to approach the heart for an operation, minimally invasive cardiac surgery is an off-pump procedure which typically involves only a 3-inch incision over the patient’s left chest between the ribs. With help of this, patients undergoing minimally invasive heart surgery experience lesser pain along with a short time for recovery after operation.
