Surgical Options for Treatment of Penile Cancer

Surgery is the most common and effective treatment option for all stages of penile cancer. Moreover, tumors can often be treated without removing any portion of the penis when penile cancer is detected in early stages. But in cases where the cancer is found in advanced stage, a part or the entire penis may be required to be removed along with the tumor. Doctors will usually discuss the treatment options that are available prior to performing the operation. Goal of treatment will however be meant to give the best chance of curing cancer, while preserving as much of penis as it is possible.

Treatment of Penile Cancer

Surgical Options for Treatment of Penile Cancer

According to penile cancer treatment guidelines, there are several different types of surgical options and some of which are mentioned below.

Circumcision – In cases where penile cancer is only in the foreskin, circumcision can effectively cure the disease. Circumcision is also performed before application of radiation therapy to penis since the treatment can cause constriction and swelling of foreskin which may lead to other problems.

Simple Excision – During this procedure the tumor is removed with a surgical knife along with some amount of normal skin surrounding the cancer. Penile cancer is removed with large amount of surrounding normal tissue in wide local excision procedure. This is done in order to ensure that no cancerous cells are left behind.

Mohs Surgery – This is microscopically controlled surgery where the surgeon removes a layer of skin which the tumor has invaded. It is subsequently checked under a microscope and another layer is then removed if the previous layer has been found to contain cancer cells. Removal of the next layer of skin is repeated until the time layer of skin is found to be free of cancerous cells.

Partial or Total Penectomy – This surgical intervention is performed to remove either part or all penis for the penile cancer patient. Penectomy is most common and most effective when cancer has penetrated deeply inside penis. While the surgeon will try to leave as much of the penis shaft as possible, goal of penectomy is to remove all cancer along with a margin of normal tissue.

Outlook for Treatment of Penile Cancer Following Penectomy

Outlook for penile cancer following penectomy typically depends upon the age of the patient, size of tumor and the stage of cancer. In case penile cancer is in advanced stage and has spread to other parts of the body, additional treatments and further care may also be required. However, treatment of penile cancer which is still confined in penis, outlook following partial or complete penectomy is generally good.
