Causes, Surgical Treatment with Related Risks, Benefits of the Arthrolysis Method

Causes:

In common cases, the stiffness in the knee arises due to a fatal injury or a related surgery. Yet, people with such hereditary issues are also susceptible to develop Arthrofibrosis. The patient develops an undesirable fibrous scar in the knee joint which eventually becomes an acute condition making knee movement difficult and causing frozen joint. People with sensitive knee and degenerative arthritis are also prone to this disorder.

Arthrofibrosis

Symptoms:

The usual symptoms of Arthrofibrosis include:
  • Difficulty in the movement of the knee and stiffness.
  • Pain experienced while sitting.
  • Inflammation around the knee region.

Treatment:

The treatment is generally varied with different patients. MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) or an X-Ray can be utilized for clinical diagnosis of the affected knee.  In mild cases, corticosteroid injections and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can be prescribed to get a temporary relieve from the unease. Usage of bracing, dynamic splinting (for patients with a recent surgery or an injury) therapeutic exercises, and surgery are the common approaches towards the treatment procedure. In some cases, the surgeon would operate under the influence of anesthesia to remove the growth of scar tissue.

Sedative manipulation, however, is accompanied with certain intricacies of patellar tendon rupture and femoral fracture. A more invasive technique for Arthrofibrosis is the open Arthrolysis allowing a better access to the affected joint region. This method helps in releasing adhesions and restoring the normal functioning of the knee. Physiotherapy and acute pain management through nerve blocks are a compulsive mode of follow- up treatments after surgery. Rehabilitative activities proposed after the surgery involves bracing of the joint, using the continuous passive motion (CPM) machine and other advisable exercises.  The lifting of heavy weight is restricted for the early weeks after surgery to avoid swelling and joint irritation and to promote muscular stability.

An open surgery is only recommended in more vital conditions.

Arthroscopy:

Treating Arthrofibrosis with this procedure can be really effective as it is an advanced approach of minimally invasive surgery. It operates with the help of an arthroscope or an endoscope which is projected into the small incision into the affected joint region. This method can also be utilized for treating torn and damaged cartilage and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) surgery.

A significant benefit of Arthroscopy, when compared to open surgery is that instead of complete opening up only two small incisions are made, one for the insertion of the arthroscope and the other for instrumentation in the knee cavity and for corrective surgery. It also ensures faster recovery with less amount of inflicted pain and is purposeful for athletes who are prone to knee injuries.

A prevalent type of arthroscopy is the anterior interval release (AIR) procedure which helps in diluting the pain arising due to the growth of scar tissue in the knee’s anterior region.

Complications:

Arthrofibrosis surgery can be a complicated procedure and should be prior analyzed before adopting any medication or executing any surgery. Weak bones can lead to intraoperative fragmentation of bones, cause ligament tears and repetitive stiffness of the knee. Sometimes, leakage of fluids in the surrounding soft tissue can cause edema. Infection, blood clots, damage to instrument and heavy bleeding are the common intricacies arising. In case, of a prior injury or surgery, a minimum interval of 3-4 months is advised before executing the surgical treatment of Arthrofibrosis. Reoccurrence of Arthrofibrosis can be minimized with proper adherence to remedial medication and therapy after the surgery.
