How Is Testicular Cancer Diagnosed?

Testicular cancer is a rare kind of cancer which results in development of abnormal cells in testicles. It affects nearly 1 % of total global population. Reports reveal that 85 % of testicular cancer cases can be treated successfully if diagnosed in early stages.

Diagnosing Testicular Cancer

There are no specific symptoms which can reveal the presence of testicular cancer. However, a lump in testicle may be a warning sign. If an individual observes any abnormal change in their testes, he should make a prompt appointment with a well-experienced urologist. Urologists may perform the enumerated tests to confirm presence of testicular cancer.
  • Physical Assessment - Physical evaluation is the primary step in detecting testicular cancer. Surgeons may check lumps on testes by thoroughly assessing the complete region. Presence of lump does not necessarily mean testicular cancer. Surgeons will suggest some evaluation more tests for a proper diagnosis.
  • Testicular Ultrasound Scan - Also referred to as, “scrotal ultrasound”, this method involves high-frequency sound waves to create pictures of internal organs. This procedure clearly indicates the nature of lump in testicle.
  • Blood Tests - Surgeons may order several blood tests for analyzing the underlying health status. There are some hormones which signify the presence of testicular cancer. These hormones are known as “tumor markers”. The following tumor markers are the hallmarks of testicular cancer.
  • AFP (alpha feta protein)
  • HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin)
  • Imaging Tests - Testicular cancer may spread to other regions of body. Urologists usually recommend imaging tests like x-rays, computed tomography scan (CT scan), and magnetic resonance imaging scan (MRI scan) to figure out location & severity of testicular cancer. These imaging tests provide detail pictures of soft tissues inside patient’s body. Depending on the results of these tests, urologists decide a suitable treatment for testicular cancer.
