Treatment for hip dislocation in India

What is hip dislocation?

A hip dislocation can occurs when the head of the thigh bone is forced out of its socket in the pelvic bone hip dislocation. A hip comprises of a ball and socket joint. The socket is a part of the pelvic bone and the ball is the upper end of the thighbone. The ball and the socket are covered with an articular cartilage. This articular cartilage creates a friction free surface for the pelvic bone and the thigh bone to glide across each other during movements at the joint. A hip dislocation is a serious and painful condition which requires immediate medical attention. In many cases, the soft tissues holding the bones together and the nerves surrounding the hip are also damaged by dislocation of hips.

Types of hip dislocations

There are different types of hip dislocations:-
•    Posterior dislocation is the most common type of hip dislocation occurred in patients. In posterior dislocation; the femur is pushed out of its socket in a backward direction.
•    In central dislocation of the hip the head of the femur, bone goes through the acetabulum. The degree of leg deformity depends on the extent of penetration of the femur bone.
•    Anterior dislocation is a less common type of hip dislocation. In anterior dislocation, the thighbone is pushed out of its socket in a forward direction.

Symptoms of hip dislocations:-

•    Unbearable pain in the hip region.
•    Tingling feeling.
•    Inability to move the leg.
•    Nerve injury.
•    Injuries to other parts of the body.
•    Numbness in foot or ankle area due to the nerve damage.

Causes of hip dislocation

Generally hip dislocation is caused by a traumatic injury which is caused by a huge force on the hips by any accident or due to fall. Hip dislocations can also be caused by developmental problems such as dysplasia of the femur head or acetabulum.

Treatment for hip dislocation

The doctors first examine the affected area. The choice of hip replacement surgery in India depends upon the joint that has been dislocated and the severity of the dislocation. In case if there are no injuries to the patient besides the dislocation then the bones are manipulated back into their original position under anesthesia.  This process is called closed reduction. Open surgery for a hip dislocation will be required in severe cases. If the dislocation does not return to normal naturally then the surgeons may recommend the following approaches to treating dislocation of hips.

•    Manipulation.
•    Immobilization.
•    Medication.
•    Rehabilitation.

Manipulation: - In manipulation approach the surgeons manipulates or reposition the joint back into place. The entire procedure is performed under general anesthesia so that the muscle near the joint relaxes and the surgeons can perform the procedure easily.

Immobilization:- In case if the dislocation of the patient returns back to the normal place then the doctors recommend the patient to wear a splint, sling or cast for several weeks. Immobilization of the dislocation allows the area to fully heal.

Medication: - The doctors prescribe a pain reliever or a muscle relaxant.

Surgery: - Surgery is generally performed if closed reduction is unsuccessful and the soft tissue and bony fragments remain unstable. Open reduction is typically performed using a posterior approach. The decreased rate of avascular necrosis is relative to the anterior approach. Thoroughly irrigate the joint is done for cleansing any loose bone fragments or soft tissue which can prevent proper articulation. Internal fixation of large fracture fragments is done using screw and plate fixation. To prevent redislocation of hips in future, it is necessary to reconstruct the joint and repairs the damaged structures.

Rehabilitation: - Rehabilitation is done when the surgeons reposition the hip dislocation into the correct position and the splints or slings are removed. Rehabilitation is performed with a goal to increase the joint’s strength and restore its range of motion.
